Headless female statue

Headless female statue

This life-size statue depicts a female figure whose identity, unfortunately, remains unknown. The loss of the head and the absence of any identifying features make it impossible to determine with certainty whether she is a deity or a woman who actually existed. The most recent studies, however, lean towards the latter hypothesis: in particular, it is believed that the statue depicted one of the women of the Julio-Claudian family, perhaps even Livia, wife of Emperor Augustus. The statue, together with those of the other members of the dynasty, was intended to adorn a public space or building in Concordia. It is possible that the sculptural group was donated to the city on the occasion of certain projects undertaken in its territory by the imperial family.
